O que mais precisa a Humanidade 茅 de um metr么nomo - Heitor Villa-Lobos 1951

According to a pre-Columbian myth, Lik is a huge snake with a tail full of fish that sometimes appears stranded on dry land. People whose luck favors them may meet Lik, who begs them to take her to a lagoon with water.

Those who are not frightened at the mere sight of the snake, usually reply that she is too heavy to be carried, but, at every opportunity and thanks to her magic, Lik becomes light. When she finds herself once again swimming in deep water, she promises those who have helped her to give them all the fish they desire whenever they ask for it, on one condition only: never to reveal how they have obtained them. (Alfred M茅traux quoted in 'Structural Anthropology' by Claude Levi-Strauss p.294)

lik

Levi-Strauss used the myth of the serpent LIK to highlight the correspondences between cultures of distant regions in South America, and between which there were centuries of distance. This album is like a snake running through South America, full of loops of traditional music, swimming in waters of digital syncretism.

The album has its origin in a live session prepared in Christmas 2015 on the occasion of the Christmas lighting project of the [pack] studio in the Amate park in Seville, within the project Luces de Barrio: An 85m long luminous network that celebrated the solidarity network existing between the South American users of the park and their use of the park as a meeting place.

Musical sources

The body of this musical LIK snake has 136 "fish", 136 loops of traditional music from South America. The loops come from 60 different songs, belonging to 42 albums. Unlike the myth of the LIK snake, I do reveal where I got them from. The music used in this remix comes from the Web, from various blogs and institutions such as the CREM (Centre de Reserche en Ethnomusicologie).

Special thanks to yoyo for sharing so many fantastic records on his blog Aural Joy. All the images used in the collage come from the records used in the remix. You can access the original records here:
