19th century memory

Kleos Cristina Enea

This musical piece belongs to the proyect: Kleos

Kleos Cristina Enea allows you to listen to the musical memory of the plants around you and weave them together as you walk through the park. Each plant is associated with a fragment of traditional music from the geographical area where it originally comes from, which is activated and increases in volume as you approach it. Origins sometimes as diffuse and distant as those of traditional musical expressions...

To compose this open work, which you can interpret with your movement, 45 musical fragments have been used without changing their original tones, making only some tempo adjustments to connect them with each other. The piece has been composed from recordings of Basque folk songs collected on 78rpm records, woven with fragments of the first sound recordings of folklore made in different parts of the world on wax cylinders. On this sound base, which shows the materiality of its recording medium, other pieces of traditional expressions recorded throughout the 20th century in the places of origin of botanical species are articulated.

Kleos Cristina Enea arranges these memories and fragments along a round trip in which the plants act as transmitters, as a chorus of voices that people can remix with their walk. You can control in the app's settings the number of plants you want to listen to at a time and also increase the listening radius to include plants farther away. In a strange autumn marked by distance, the work is composed from the past to meet us in the present and project us in coexistence into the future, thinking itself as a seed that can generate other synergies and developments in Donostia / San Sebastian.

Presentation

Kleos Cristina Enea was developed for the VI Encuentro de Cultura y Ciudadanía planned to take place in Tabakalera, Donistia, but developed virtually due to COVID. You can see here the presentation of the project we did. For the next edition, repeated in Donostia, we were able to make some guided walks through the park with the app.

Musical sources

The sound piece for Kleos Cristina Enea is composed with 45 musical fragments from different regions of the world, each of these fragments sounds when we approach with the app to plant species whose biological origin is linked to that cultural region.
