Teatro Central 2024
A collective creation device and an investigation into the musical listening habits of 4th-year high school students from Seville.
Collective remix process with students of 4th ESO of Seville from their musical showers.
Think of a song that is important to you, one that accompanies you when you leave school, or walk around your neighborhood... one that when time goes by can remind you of some experience you have had now that you are 15 years old, about to finish ESO... when a new stage opens. Sampling that song is a way to make it more ours, to create something new with it, to make music with the music we like.
We are going to go to the Central Theater to learn how to sample, to create loops... and we are going to build a sound machine with the loops that each kid that passes through the laboratory has made. A machine that will allow us to make music and improvise together in a concert hall.
The laboratory aims to:
- Introduce students to music creation through remixing and sampling, as well as share with the participating teachers possible tools and methodologies for use in the classroom.
- To develop a process of research and data collection on music listening of 4th ESO students for later visualization.
- To bring 4th ESO students closer to the Theater and to expand the Theater to the city.
students musical selections
To approach the songs chosen by the participating students, we have automatically extracted the musical genres (assigned by Shazam) and Esperanza Moreno has developed a data visualization that shows the presence of each of the genres in total and by educational center (you can toggle with the black icon of the circles).
Although musical labels are always relative and it is not easy to catalog music, the data visualization shows us that the adult view of teenagers' musical tastes ("...they only listen to reguettón") is biased. The reality, at least in this sample, reveals a much more diverse landscape of personal musical tastes.
Interviews
During the students' visit to the Theater we asked them if they wanted to share the emotions and stories behind each of the songs they had chosen to sample in the workshop. Concha Laverán was doing interviews in which, as it could not be otherwise, music is shown to us as that necessary space that articulates our emotions and life experiences.

Talleres
Students from IES Béquer, IES Cervantes, IES Llanes, IES Macarena, IES San Jerónimo and IES Martínez Montañes participated in the sampling and remixing workshops held at the Teatro Central. 185 kids were learning to sample and create loops from their significant songs.
