Remixing and shared listening

Teatre L'Artesá 2024

A workshop to explore the idea of shared listening through remixing with students from the IES Ribera Baixa and the Institut Salvador Dalí.

This workshop belongs to the proyect: El Prat Laboratory

The objective of the laboratory in El Prat for the 2023-24 course is to create with the students a musical archive around the idea of shared listening and put it in movement through remixing. We want to work with music as a generator of spaces from which we articulate our identity dynamically over time.

The archive is planned in 3 scales:

  • With the students of 1st ESO of IES Ribera (Nuria) baixa we will explore shared listening in the family environment. The students will collect moments of listening and memories associated with a shared song to sample it and create a sound collage in group with other loops from the archive of their class.
  • With the students of 3rd ESO of IES Ribera Baixa (Ada) we will investigate shared listening with colleagues in the neighborhood. We will look for songs linked to some space in the neighborhood, to compose small remixes exploring movement and image.
  • With the students of 2nd ESO of the IES Dalí (Neus) shared listening is raised in the Catalan cultural environment. We will work with the students from a sound archive connected to the Catalan identity and language in different historical moments, so that the students reinterpret a song through the remix.
Selection of pieces and interviews

Musical pieces

If last year our idea was to create a large sound archive created through the songs selected individually by the students, this year we wanted to go a step further in the musical creation through electronics, working from the idea of shared listening and compositional teamwork. The premise was to create in working groups of 3 or 4 students a musical piece of no more than 2 minutes, created from selected and edited loops, extracted from the songs previously collected by the students. We also conducted group interviews where the students told us why they made these selections and with whom and where they usually listen to these "shared listening" songs.

Workshop development

With the students of IES Ribera Baixa, we developed two sessions of musical creation through remixing to create musical pieces sampling songs chosen by them. The work was done in groups of 3 or 4 students, a first work session of selection of loops and a second one of musical composition and sharing of the pieces created

With the students of IES Dalí the approach was different: From an archive of music connected to the Catalan identity and language in different historical moments previously worked in class, we worked with the students on the composition with loops to introduce them to the musical creation from electronics. After two work sessions at the Capsa, each group created a piece of music based on a song from the initial archive and combining loops of the songs they listen to every day.
